Ocean Adventurers Return From Honduras

Travel Log From Steve Kramer, Instructor, Ocean Adventures. Hi guys. I just got back from Roatan, Honduras and guess what? I had a great time!! The diving was great. Viz was around 80 to 100 ft. Water temp was low 80's. We made around 20 dives on a very beautiful reef, with depths anywhere from 20 to 130+ ft. Of course it was pretty humid, and it rained hard on a couple of occasions near the end of the trip. For some reason, it seemed perfectly natural to be walking down a muddy narrow dirt road, pot holes all over the place, rain pouring down, small shops and bars on one side, the Caribbean on the other, palm trees rustling in the wind. Too many great stories to try to tell in this space, so you'll have to look me up to get the inside info!!! :-0

Everyone had a great time and got along really well. Sorry National Inquirer, no dirt to dish out from this trip! The picture here was taken by Brant, a really great guy from St. Louis who was part of our group. I think you'll agree, he's a great photographer. Hope I get to see you all and show the rest of the pictures.

Anyway, I'm back in country now, planning my next great adventure to the Red Sea in August. I used to wonder what I would do when I grew up. Now I realize I never had any intention of growing up!! Peace!! Steve

Editor's Note: Steve's email says it all, want to hear great stories and see some awesome photos from the Shark dive, Dolphin dive and scenes above water and below? Talk to Joseph, Steve Kramer, Shawna, Jeff, Stella, Aimee, Marko, Ryenne, Eric or Nicky. Great trip guys! Thanks for all the adventures, laughs and memories - Shawna McLean, OADC Divemaster. Join DAN's Project Dive Exploration Extravaganza 2008

DAN's Annual Project Dive Exploration (PDE) Research program seeks volunteers to provide important dive data. Summer is here, and with it comes several opportunities to get involved and support DANŽ. The first in line is the PDE Extravaganza!

The beauty of the PDE Extravaganza is that you don't have to do anything more than you already do. You'll be spending quality time underwater this summer, so why not contribute your dive profiles to DAN Research? PDE Extravaganza 2008 is the second celebration of Project Dive Exploration, the dive data collection program is the most extensive (and ongoing) study of recreational diving ever conducted.

The program runs May 26-Sept.1, 2008, and participation in PDE is simple. A visit to the PDE Extravaganza link at www.DiversAlertNetwork.org will walk you through the steps to get started.

All divers who submit 10 or more dives completed between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2008 will receive a specially-designed T-shirt at the end of the challenge. In addition, the diver will automatically receive one entry into a drawing for a DAN gift certificate worth $250*. You can earn another entry for every five additional dives submitted. There's no limit to the number of times you can be entered.

"We had high hopes for the number of dive profiles we might receive during last year's Extravaganza," says Donna Uguccioni, Research Coordinator for DAN. "But the response we received in 2007 was simply overwhelming. Dive profiles were submitted in droves by every kind of diver from all over the world. It exceeded every hope and expectation we had for the Extravaganza, and we can't wait to see what 2008 will bring." All eligible dives must be submitted no later than Sept. 30, 2008; the winner will be announced Oct. 31. For additional information on PDE Extravaganza 2008, visit www.DiversAlertNetwork.org or call (800) 446- 2671.

Casino Night At SCUBA SHOW To Benefit "California Ships 2 Reefs"

The Scuba Show Casino Night June 21, is a major fund-raiser for California Ships to Reefs AND a lot of Vegas-style fun. California Ships to Reefs (CS2R), Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit Public Benefit Corporation formed to make California a world-class diving destination, is pleased to announce that Dale Sheckler, publisher of California Diving News and organizer of the largest consumer SCUBA show in the United States, "SCUBA Show 2008" is repeating 2007's very successful event by designating CS2R as the beneficiary of this year's Casino Night on June 21, 2008.

The SCUBA Show is a two-day event featuring display booths attended by representatives from major diving industry manufacturers, dive travel agencies, certification agencies, dive boat operators, ocean conservancy organizations, and many more exhibitors. The event includes a series of diving- related seminars and presentations and a continuous underwater film festival. The SCUBA show will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22, 2008 at the Long Beach Convention Center. Additional information is available at www.scubashow.com.

The goal of CS2R is to make California an international wreck diving destination and to significantly invigorate diving and underwater tourism within the state, while helping to revive the ocean's unique ecosystem. CS2R has a mandate to lead a state-wide cooperative effort, assisting state and federal government agencies by developing a process for accepting, environmentally cleaning, and sinking decommissioned ships as artificial reefs.

Tickets for Casino Night are available for $25 each which provides entry, one end-of-night raffle ticket, and $500 in gaming chips to earn more raffle tickets. The first 50 people attending the event will receive a guaranteed door prize. Attendees who are members of the dive club with the most people attending will each receive an extra 10 raffle tickets for each member towards the end-of-night drawing. Those attendees who wear and show their CS2R Reef Tags (find out where to purchase at www.CS2R.org) will receive an extra $100 in gaming chips. Attendance at the SCUBA Show is not necessary to attend Casino Night and everyone is welcome!

There are over $30,000 in donated prizes available for the silent auction and end-of-night drawing, including the grand prize, a diving trip to Indonesia including 7 nights at Cocotinos Resort plus 5 nights at Kasawari- Lembeh Resort, provided by Scuba Travel Ventures: To purchase tickets contact Steve at 310.578.9391

Baywatch Lifeguards To Speak At June 10 Dive Club Meeting

Say "Baywatch" anywhere in the world and images come to mind of bathing-suited beauties bouncing down the beach, beautiful boys in buff boats racing through the surf, and wide sandy beaches patrolled by lifeguards who stepped out of modeling catalogues. It doesn't matter what language you're speaking, thanks to the television show, Baywatch needs no translation in hundreds of dialects around the world. This American export familiarized Japanese, Germans, South Africans and the rest of the world with the idealized Southern California lifeguards portrayed in the long-running television show

Perhaps the only place in the world where "Baywatch" means something else is Catalina Island. Say "Baywatch" here and something much different, but much more important comes to mind. Baywatch Avalon and Baywatch Isthmus are our rescuers, our paramedics and our first line of defense against everything from bee stings to heart attacks and from dive accidents to lost hikers.

Those life-saving jobs are completed by eight full-time fully trained paramedics. Like their mainland counterparts - and the characters portrayed in the show - these men and women are employed by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which operates the County-wide Beach Lifeguard program

Don't miss this meeting June 10, 7pm at Ocean Adventures, our speakers Brian Lanich, Ocean Lifeguard Specialist / Paramedic and Matt Rhodes, Ocean Lifeguard Specialist, have a great presentation just for our dive club.
